Perspective: Ralph Edwards on Lowell Thomas

Ralph Edwards, the creator of the television program “This is Your Life,” speaks about Lowell Thomas in this excerpt from “One-Night Encore for ‘This Is Your Life’” by Steven Farber, New York Times, April 16, 1987.

“Lowell Thomas gave me my worst evening,” Mr. Edwards recalled. “He was master of ceremonies at an event at the old Astor Hotel ballroom in New York. After it had started, I walked in with an NBC camera, a ‘This is Your Life’ book under my arm, and went up to him and said, ‘Tonight, Lowell Thomas, this is your life!’ He said, ‘This is a sinister conspiracy.’ The show went downhill from there. As I took him up toward the stage, I said to him, ‘You’re going to enjoy this.’ He said, ‘I doubt it very much.’ And he didn’t.”
